[Opening paragraph, in which we meet Lani and Ksenia, having sex in the back of a van. The description of which here would violate our hosting service’s TOS. So. Carrying on:]
They jumped as Juliet thumped a hand on the back of the van. “You two done yet?” she called through the loading doors. “Clock’s ticking.”
Ksenia swore a blue streak as [also redacted, see above], and flung open the back door onto the alley. “We go on my say,” she spat, pulling her pants back up and flinging the strap into a bag on the van’s floor. Daring Juliet to challenge her.
“Her say,” the Black woman said to Kairi next to her with a laugh.
“Not like I spent weeks drawing up the timetable for this one,” the tall Japanese woman said as she hoisted the automatic rifle to rest it over one muscular shoulder. “Or for Albany. Or Syracuse…”
Ksenia muttered as she grabbed her own gun and left it hanging low in one hand, the other gripping the top ridge of the open doors. “Fine, we wait on the boss,” she said as she looked over her shoulder.
Lani sighed in contentment as she came to stand beside Ksenia and smacked her lover’s ass. “All right, girls,” she said as she tied her jaw-length hair back with a well-loved elastic and slipped a ski mask over her head. “Let’s go rob a bank.”

The quiet whisper of the air conditioning in Marrowmont First National Bank’s moderately sized interior did its best to counter the stifling August heat. The building showing its age, but frequently updated, its marble countertops and flooring and the metal stanchions of rope line queues cool to the touch despite the muggy weather. Behind spotless glass enclosures, tellers moved with a quiet, almost preternatural grace, makeup perfect, smiles showing dazzlingly white teeth. Lines moving fast even with customers unhurried.
Mid-morning light flashed off an intricate floor mosaic as the doors swung open and the four black-garbed women swept inside. A customer making his way to the exit looked up from closing the envelope in his hands, face falling, and reached into his jacket toward a shoulder holster, before a masked Kairi knocked the butt of her rifle into his face. Blood sprayed from his broken nose, and a second hit dropped him, Ksenia kicking aside the man’s now freed weapon as it clattered on the floor. The others spreading out, weapons raised, as the screaming began.
Lani fired a single shot from her handgun into the air, sending customers ducking or clinging fast to each other. The tellers strangely unmoved, glancing at one another as Lani shouted: “Customers on the floor. Now!”
