The Holy Hammer Falls

War has come to Marrowmont. The fallout from the breach of the shield network – word spreading underground and on fringe forums of the city’s existence – has brought Hunters seeking trophies, and the eradication of the city. But theirs is not the only danger facing Marrowmont: for centuries the Vatican has turned a blind eye to the city’s existence. But now, fearful of being seen as connected to a city of “monsters,” they send their own emissaries to correct that mistake: marriages of mortal tech and stolen divine blood, the Vatican Angels, too, are coming to cleanse the city. But Marrowmont's citizens won't let their city, or its people, die without a fight.

CW: violence against women (descriptions of witch hunts manner of death/aftermath); militarized violence; possible arachnophobia triggers

11,800 words. Standalone.

First Wave

The rumble of distant thunder echoes through Marrowmont’s streets as booted feet sweep into its outlying urban conclaves from the industrial district at its western edge. Danika holds up a fist to halt her unit, staring at the sky. Pregnant clouds, bellies bruised and heavy in the moonlit, midnight dark, roll in swift from the northeast, carrying Atlantic cold and the tang of salt and distant fog settling heavy on rocky shore.

“Not forecasted. Magic?” asks Jess at Danika’s shoulder. A small, black-haired white woman, pupils blown wide as saucers from the competing uppers coursing through her system, even as her unslung rifle stays still as stone in her death-gripped hands. Her eyes tracking the heavens just like the rest of the squad.

The others no less nervous. A loose affiliation of Hunters Danika’s worked with in past. The dozens of other units making their way into the city along similar trajectories also composed of people who’ve proven they can work in tandem. Together, they make a collective force several hundred strong, with members drawn from across the country. Seasoned killers of beasts and terrors, all. And none of them wanting to waste the month’s worth of planning that followed the discovery of a city of monsters; a month spent dreaming of new trophies dug out of the dark, shorn free from whatever nightmares await them.

Danika shakes her head at Jess’s question, the imposing white woman’s long blonde hair threatening to break its carefully maintained bonds. “A gift: more cover. When we hit their defenses, you’ll know.”

She cuts her hand down and forward, signalling to move out. Her unit’s guns held high and tight as they follow Danika on point. They reach the first proper businesses and high tenements as a crack of thunder announces the sudden rain, pelting in sheets. Lit sharply after by a fork of lightning overhead. In its wake, only streetlamps left to light the city as the downpour obscures the moon and stars.

[The majority of the second section is a sex scene between Hulngal and Igibala. The descriptions of which posted here would violate our hosting service’s TOS. But, you can have a look at the preview images to read some of that instead.]
